英国诺丁汉大学职业心理学硕士、英国和美国心理学会的会员和上海职业心理学家联谊会(SNBP)的创始人,China Select 善择合伙人,运营总监,职业心理学家2006年成为China Select 善择合伙创立者
James拥有丰富的跨国工作经验背景和应用心理学知识和专业咨询经验。曾任英国皇家通讯部队军官,太古集团国泰航空公司非洲及印度洋地区总经理,IWNC上海分公司负责人和高级咨询顾问。作为测评和领导力咨询专家,他服务的主要客户包括马士基集团,可口可乐、荷兰银行、太古集团、上海英国商会和美世咨询等著名机构。
China Select善择公司简介
China Select善择是上海市批准成立的第一家专业开发推广心理测验工具的中国公司,专注于人力资源测评工具和相关解决方案的深入开发和培训推广,提供一系列适用于中国企业和个体的高质量的心理测量工具。
China Select善择服务领域主要包括三个方面: 提供专业心理测验、在线测验管理系统、专业培训。
 
 
 

  中国人力资源网:能告诉我们是什么样的学业和职业经历使得您成为了一个心理测评专家吗?

  James I’ve been very lucky to have had a lot of work experience before focusing on psychology and psychometrics. My first degree was in Geography but did include some courses on cognitive psychology. I then had a career as an officer in the British Army, working in telecommunications and spending a lot of time flying in helicopters! I left the Army to join the Swire Group (太古) in Hong Kong, working for Cathay Pacific Airways for 8 years. In that time I experienced a whole range of jobs - from airport operations and marketing, to HR and government relations. I also lived in several countries, including South Africa where I was the General Manager in charge of the business operations for sub-Saharan African and the Indian Ocean.
  I then had a desire to study again so first went to Beijing for 7 months to learn 普通话 and later took two post-graduate courses in psychology (Dip Psych) and occupational psychology (MSc), back in the UK. I had always enjoyed the people development aspects of my work, and firmly believed that, through applied psychology, I could make a worthwhile contribution to improving the working life of many people. I moved back to China four years ago. Initially I provided leadership and people development consulting services for various multi-national companies, before taking a specific focus in talent assessment at China Select.

  后来我有了再次学习的愿望。我先在北京用了7个月的时间学习普通话,然后回到英国完成了心理学和职业心理学这两个研究生课程,得到了职业心理学硕士学位。我一直都喜欢我工作中关于人员发展的部分,并坚定地认为通过应用心理学,我能够对改善许多人的职业生涯做出有价值的贡献。四年前我搬回了中国。最初我为多家跨国公司提供了领导力和人员发展的咨询服务,然后在China Select善择更加明确地专注于人才测评。

  中国人力资源网:为什么来中国进行职业发展呢?

  JamesFirstly, I’ve been connected to China since arriving in Hong Kong in 1990. Even back then my colleagues, friends and clients were Chinese. I find the culture to be of great depth and interest. Secondly, there is real opportunity here to make a significant contribution in the field of occupational psychology and psychometrics in particular. Together, it makes it a great place to live and work.

  James The psychological assessment business is very well established in Western Europe and the UK. Psychological testing has been a feature of assessment at work for 50 years. There are clear regulatory guidelines and professional bodies (such as the British Psychological Society and International Test Commission) which have a strong influence over the professional practice in the area. A key feature of this concerns the requirement for professional training before a person can use a psychological test (e.g. a mental ability test or personality assessment). There are many psychometric test publishing companies who develop more and more well-researched and sophisticated assessments. The current focus is to develop more tools that use the internet for test administration and tools that use multi-media to create assessments with a closer link to real life experiences.

  JamesThere are 4 parts to the ‘gap’ – education, quality, regulation, and copyright. China already has a large number of companies who provide psychometric assessments for use in organizational talent management. China also has many people very well qualified to produce excellent tests. It is these 4 parts of the ‘gap’ that hold us back. Education refers to the low level of professional knowledge in both the people currently in the industry and of HR professionals. By ‘quality’ I mean that many locally produced tests are poorly researched and may be little more than a set of interesting questions. 'Regulation' is clearly something that has benefited the development of psychology in the West. We support a stronger role for the Chinese Psychological Society in setting standards in this area. The final part of the ‘gap’ concerns copyright. To create a high quality test requires the investment of a great deal of time, effort, and expertise. Without proper copyright protection this investment will be wasted and good companies and test developers will be discouraged from developing local tests.
  我认为差距在四个方面:教育、品质、规范与版权问题。中国已经有许多公司在提供心理测评,用于企业人才管理。这里同样也有许多人具有很好的资格来编制优秀的测验。但是,是这四个方面的差距限制了我们。
  教育指的是专业知识的水平较低,包括行业内已有的人和HR的专业人员;对于品质,我指的是许多本土编制的测验都没有经过完备的研究,并且可能比一套趣味问题好不到哪儿去;对于国外心理学的发展,行业规范无疑使之获益颇多。我们希望并支持中国心理学会在的确立该领域的规范标准的工作中发挥更加强有力的作用。最后一方面是版权问题。编制一个高品质的测验需要投入大量资金、时间、努力和专业技能。一旦缺乏适当的版权保护,这些投入就会被全部浪费,并且优秀的公司和测验开发者也会对开发本土测验感到气馁。

  中国人力资源网:介绍一些China Select善择,成立这个公司的初衷与目标、定位、远景

  JamesLouis Yang, 杨立谦,our other Director, and I had a clear idea that China Select 善择 could help fill this ‘gap’ between the established international approach to psychometrics and the situation in China at the time. Our vision was to build a company that could be relied on as a source of high-quality psychometric assessments for people and organisations in China. We wanted to be a neutral provider of a range of tools and professional training, empowering people to use psychometrics more effectively as part of their decision-making processes. These tools can come from anywhere – local or international – as long as they are available in Chinese, have sound psychometric properties and are backed by good research. We also have a clear intention to contribute to the overall development of psychometrics in China – through making our professional voice heard and work closely with the Chinese Psychological Society, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the reputable universities already playing an important role in this area.

  JamesWe are still a rather fresh, new company, so some sort of achievement happens every day! There are perhaps a few that stand out: we were the first company to be awarded a formal licence by the Shanghai government to develop psychometrics assessments; we represent several renowned overseas assessment companies; we are proud to already count among our clients one of the world largest HR consultancies in China, like Mercer and Hay, China’s largest banks, like ICBC and Ever Bright Bank, national research team to the South Pole, and some global top 500 companies; and we also developed the first training courses in China aimed to produce a level of competency equivalent to standards set by the International Test Commission and the British Psychological Society - these courses have been well recognised by the country’s most reputable psychometricians, HR consultants and the Professional Psychometric Commission of the Chinese Psychological Society. What is ahead? We aim to continue on our mission to be a leading assessment and professional training provider in this area.
